From what I have studied, (although I could be wrong, but hear me out) Even though Spain and Romano are often paired up becuase of S. Italy being a Spanish territory for many, many years, it makes more sense for me at least that both Italy's to be paired up with both Germany's. Alright, here is my view, there will be alot of history to cover, but please bear with me. It's already been established in the manga and anime that Romano was under Spain's rule and care for over a hundred years, but near the end of Spain's rule, historically, Italians were becoming more and more tired of Spanish rule, and although their languages and cultures are similar, one must understand that insular and S. Italy wanted to feel a sense of national pride, establish relations with other lands(nations), and most importantly, independence and a national image. Even before Spanish rule, it became clear that both Italies were seen as just more land for the expanding empires of the time, and hate for foreigners was not uncommon, which explains Hidekazu Himuraya's portrayal of S. Italy in the manga and anime as aggressive and anti-social. It should also be noted that S. Italy was under spanish rule from 1559-1713, then, along with Northern Italy, became part of the Austrian Empire, so although Austria basically handed Romano over to Spain in the manga/anime, he eventually reclaimed him after the war of Spanish succession, where some S. Italians hailed Austria as a liberator. By the 1800's France was a dominant ruler of both Italy's, but when Napolean III fell, Both Italy's finally united to form the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Now comes the interesting part. In 1866, Otto Von Bismark of Prussia offered to make an allience with the Kingdom of Italy against the Austrian Empire, and promised Italy(s)a piece of Austrian territory. After that success, Italy soon benefitted from another Prussian war, the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, which finnally ended with an OFFICIAL unification of all of Italy. In 1882, Italy formed another allience with both the Prussian and Austrian Empires in 1882, and relations between the three were close until 1914, the year World War One started. During this allience Italy(s) had a much closer relationship with Germany(Prussia). In 1922, Benito Mussolini, fascist leader, became leader of the Kingdom of Italy, and despite what alot of fanfictions say about Romano being opposed to Fascism, was EXTREMELY and I mean EXTREMELY popular with the Italians, and the Southern part of Italy showed no exception. The Spanish Civil War (1937-1939) began when the Spainsh people freely elected a Republican government, which basically represents Hetalia's Antonio Vargas. In one episode, it is mentioned by Romano that he helped Spain in his Civil War, but he probably meant it in another way than what most people think. It is true that Italy fought in Spain, but keep in mind, that Germany was also helping the Italians in the conflict, and both fought alongside the Nationalist Spaniards under Francisco Franco, who were at the time a small, ragtag rebellion, fighting the more politically powerful Republic of Spain, which was more popular with the people and held 2/3rds of all of Spain, which means that it makes more sense to say that Antonio Vargas represented the Republican side, which was fighting the Nationalists supported by Germany and Italy. I believe that what Romano meant when he said he helped out Spain in the war, is that he helped him get under control by slapping him around and kicking his ass as if Antonio was an out of control child. This easily tells us Romano's way of dealing with a problem, by "helping" through force and points out Romano's personality, as well as being an explenation to why Spain in the anime/manga refused to help the Italian Bros out when England captured them. When World War II broke out, Germany helped it's Italian ally greatly, especially in Africa and Southern Italy when it was invaded. In turn, the Italians helped the Germans in the Eastern front. After a short civil war, that occured during WW2 between both Italy's, Fascist(North) and Free(South), and finally after WW2 ended, Italy(s) began diplomatic relations with Germany again. Intrestingly enough, Germany has more relations with Italy(s) than Spain. Spain in reality has more relations with Argentina than Italy, with about forty consuls and one embassy over there, whereas having only one embassy in Italy. Germany has 12 consuls and one embassy in Italy, from Milan to Naples, as well as Rome. Italy has 12 consuls and one embassy in Germany, while having only one embassy in Spain. The Cold War and the fall of Communism didn't stop Italian-German relations, or impede East German(technically Prussia)relations at all! To this day, relations remain this way, and when it comes to foreign citizens in Italy, the Germans always outnumber any other nationals, Spain doesn't even come close. Germany also has a great deal of Italian nationals too. I know it sounds as if I am talking about Veniziano and Ludwig, but this also applies to Romano and Prussia without exception. I hope I made any sense and brought to the attention the fact that Pru-mano makes ALOT more sense then spa-mano. Thank you for your interest! (P.S. if this helps peoples understanding, then spread the word of Prumano!)
